H10 Casa Mimosa

I have visited Barcelona a number of times now and instantly fall in love with the city’s hypnotic charm each time I visit. This Catalonian metropolis has it all; incredible food, culture, architectural marvels and a pretty great beach too! On this trip to Barcelona, I wanted to stay somewhere right in the heart of the city, slightly away from the hubbub of the Gothic quarter, but near the Gaudi buildings. I also wanted somewhere that has the feeling of being hidden away, a place you can escape to after a day of sightseeing with the masses. So when an invitation to try out H10 Hotels latest property the H10 Casa Mimosa came to me I knew it was going to be the perfect place for my latest city adventure.

Concept

Located in a 19th century traditional Catalan-style building and on the same block as Casa Milà, (La Pedrera – One of Gaudi’s most famous pieces of work) you really are in the heart of all things cultural! Casa Mimosa is 4 stars, but I would give it 4 stars ++ it is simply stunning, elegant and cosmopolitan, with a welcoming relaxed feeling the moment you walk through the doors. The H10 brand has hotels all over Spain, and the Caribbean as well as major cities across Europe but this is no cookie-cutter property; the Casa Mimosa has the feeling of a standalone boutique hotel. Spacious rooms that blend contemporary design with the timeless elegance of the building lie await. The hotel’s restaurant and bar – El Til-ler look out to the leafy garden complete with a swimming pool and sunloungers that are a million miles away from a bog standard hotel. On the roof the terrace bar and pool look out over to the rooftop of La Pedrera, this really is an incredibly special place in the city.

Check In

Walking in through the large entrance doorway, the hotel’s reception is alcoved to the right and to the left a marble staircase leads up to the upper floors and beyond the hotel’s lounge and restaurant which lead out into the garden. Grey natural colours in the reception really allow the space’s original mouldings and stonework to stand out.

A glass of champagne, prosecco or water is offered on arrival, and given the hot weather that day it was a welcome start to the experience. We were slightly early for check-in (check-in 3pm) so we explored the hotel further and went for a look around the shops which the area is full of.  When we came back our room was ready, with bags in the room on the bag rest.

Location

As already mentioned you have one of the most enviable vista in Barcelona with an uninterrupted view across to the rooftop and chimneys of Gaudis La Pedrera. Hopefully, like me you will have a ‘wow’ moment when you head to the hotel’s roof terrace and see it. The area the hotel is in is called Eixample a few minutes walk to a key metro station Diagonal (airport link) which is located on one of the main artery roads Passeig de Gracia in the city centre. Passeig de Gracia is lined with many designer boutiques and big-name brand stores. You are then about a 20-minute walk to Plaça de Catalunya (where El Corte Ingles is located) and beyond that is the start of the Gothic Quarter, a must for tourists.

The Room

The hotel is boutique in size at 48 rooms and this intimacy is perfect – you almost feel like you have the place to yourself as it is just pleasantly busy. Rooms start with classics, moving up to deluxe, then rooms with views out to the garden and moving up to suites. We were lucky enough to have the best room in the hotel the Condal Suite and what a space it is! A large airy and completely luxurious 60-m² space, full of light thanks to its two French windows that lead out to the full-length balcony.

The suite has the feeling of a grandiose mansion house, laid out with a bed at one end, a lounge space in the middle and a work desk at the other end. In the middle of the right wall, grand double doors lead you into the breathtaking bathroom area. Original features are all around the space, starting with the roof and rich gold guilted cornicing, 3 chandeliers drop down across the roof, completely over-the-top luxury.

The bed features a tryptic headboard made out of walnut with two clever little reading lights should you wish to dim the lights and still have your nose in a book. To the left of the bed a suspension light by designers Parachilna drops down and across from the bed a large flatscreen TV allows you watch in bed and in reverse a TV behind it for the lounge area.

The middle of the room incorporates a small lounge area with the focal point being the marble fireplace and large gilt-edged mirror.

In the third quarter of the room is a writing desk with an integrated minibar and to complete the look includes a softshell Vitra chair.

Bathroom

I LOVED the bathroom, white marble walls and floor, with a shell-shaped bath and shower in the centre. To the left a separate toilet area and to the right a large walk-in rain shower. On the far right wall two giant closet spaces for your clothes. To the left twin sinks with full wall-to-wall mirror.

Some of the finishing touches I loved 

In addition to water being left in the room a couple of welcome sangrias were also provided.

I love trying out bathroom amenities and these ones by Rituals are delicious! I ended up searching the internet when I was home to find out where I could buy more of the Orange and Ceder Wood Body wash.

Public Areas

Roof Terrace

As already mentioned a view to die for is found on the roof as well as a cute terrace bar (head there when the sun is setting it is perfectly positioned) and when the weather gets too hot a dip in the rooftop pool is just the answer.

Lounge

A beautiful lounge that leads onto the restaurant is located on the ground floor. Classic mid-century low-rise furniture gives the space an airy calming feel to it.

Garden

The hotel makes the most of the outside space with an outdoor patio and swimming pool. Planted with trees and bushes it has a romantic feel to it, the former coach house at the back has been converted into a meeting space. This is an ideal space to relax in the afternoon sun with a good book and a glass of wine!

Final Thoughts

I did have the best room in the hotel, but the whole hotel is beautiful, a treat to stay in and a complete oasis in what is a busy working city. A great base for all tourists looking for an extra special hotel experience in Barcelona.
