In Conversation With Alexandre Ariel, General Manager, Fairmont Monte Carlo

With over 20 years of experience in luxury hospitality, Alexandre Ariel began his career at Hôtel de Crillon in Paris and Trianon Palace in Versailles. He then worked at Disney’s Chefs de France in Florida, USA, and Club Med in Paris before excelling as Assistant Director of Food and Beverage at InterContinental Chicago. Alexandre Ariel joined the Fairmont brand in 2007 at Fairmont Monte Carlo (read our hotel review here), where he held key positions such as Director of Events and Director of Food and Beverage. After four promotions, including one at Fairmont Rey Juan Carlos I in Barcelona, he returned to Monte Carlo in 2018 as Hotel Manager and then General Manager in 2024, leading significant projects that enhanced the hotel’s reputation and performance.

Describe a typical day for you – if such a thing exists.

A typical day as General Manager of the Fairmont Monte Carlo is a balance of strategy and action. My mornings begin with reviewing performance metrics and aligning priorities with my leadership team. I stay highly visible, engaging with guests, supporting the team, and ensuring operational excellence.

Strategic planning is key—I focus on modernizing operations, enhancing guest experiences, and collaborating with corporate teams. Evenings often involve hosting events or VIP guests. Every day is dynamic and rewarding, especially in such an iconic location at the heart of Monaco.

Have you always envisaged carving out a career in the luxury hospitality sector?

Not initially, but it became clear early in my career that luxury hospitality was where I belonged. My journey began in Paris at iconic properties like the Hôtel de Crillon and the Trianon Palace, where I discovered a passion for delivering exceptional experiences. Over time, I embraced the dynamic challenges and rewards of the industry, working across renowned brands like Disney, Club Med, InterContinental, and Fairmont.

Each step reinforced my love for this sector, and now, as General Manager of the Fairmont Monte Carlo, I’m proud to contribute to its legacy while shaping its future.

Any words of wisdom for those who would like to work in the industry?

My advice would be to always remain passionate, humble, and open to learning; it also requires a high level of dedication and professionalism. The luxury hospitality industry is about creating memorable experiences, which requires a deep understanding of people, a commitment to excellence, and the ability to adapt.

Start by building strong foundations—learn the basics, pay attention to detail, and develop interpersonal skills. Above all, work with integrity and a genuine desire to serve others. This industry offers endless opportunities, but it’s the passion for hospitality and dedication to the guest experience that will set you apart.

What does luxury mean to you?

To me, luxury is about creating exceptional, memorable experiences that make guests feel valued and unique. It’s not just about high-end amenities but about attention to detail, personalized service, and offering moments of tranquillity and indulgence. True luxury is in the art of anticipating needs and delivering beyond expectations, allowing guests to feel completely immersed in their surroundings and at ease.

Finally, what is your life motto? If you have one.

My life motto is “Strive for excellence, embrace change.” I believe in constantly improving in my professional endeavours. Excellence is a journey and being open to change and innovation is key to growth and success.

Luxury, to me, is about creating an experience that goes beyond the ordinary, offering a sense of comfort and personal fulfilment. It’s deeply tied to quality, the excellence of service, and the emotional resonance of an experience.
