The Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group has unveiled its second London property, Mandarin Oriental Mayfair which has opened today. Located on the historic Hanover Square in Mayfair, this new hotel brings a contemporary touch to one of London’s most storied neighbourhoods, where fashion, art, business, and culture intersect.
Designed by the acclaimed architectural firm Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, Mandarin Oriental Mayfair is the first new build in Mayfair for over a decade. The modern structure, with its unique Vierendeel framework, offers spacious interiors and a refined façade, featuring burnt red brick ‘baguettes’ inspired by the surrounding Georgian architecture. This striking design element is the longest of its kind in the UK, making the building a landmark in its own right.
Inside, the hotel boasts 50 luxurious guestrooms and suites, and 77 private residences, meticulously crafted by the British design studio, Studio Indigo. Each room blends Mandarin Oriental’s renowned Asian heritage with local influences, creating a bespoke experience that feels both timeless and distinctly modern. The interior design, inspired by haute couture, features a rich palette of emerald green, maroon, and turquoise. Fine timbers, marble, bespoke lighting, and hand-painted silk wallpaper by House of de Gournay enhance the opulent atmosphere. The wallpaper, adorned with magnolia blossoms, nods to Hanover Square’s trees and the hotel’s oriental roots, with its Feng Shui considerations adding to the rooms’ tranquil ambience.
Public spaces in the hotel, including the reception, atrium, and dining areas, are designed by Tokyo-based Curiosity. The hotel’s lobby and spa reception showcase rare green Ming marble, reflecting the greenery of nearby Hanover Square and Berkeley Square. The dining areas evoke natural elements such as wind, water, earth, and fire, through carefully designed lighting and textures.
Mandarin Oriental Mayfair is also the stage for the UK debut of award-winning Chef Akira Back. Known for his innovative approach to Japanese cuisine, Back brings a sense of adventure to the hotel’s culinary offerings. The 148-seat restaurant includes three private dining rooms and features dishes like the ‘AB Tuna Pizza,’ a delightful combination of ponzu aioli, tuna sashimi, and white truffle oil on a crunchy crust. The 14-seater Dosa provides an intimate setting for contemporary Korean cuisine, while the ABar Lounge offers artistic cocktails and small bites, accompanied by live DJ performances. Later in 2024, the ABar Rooftop will open, offering panoramic views of the London skyline.
For those seeking relaxation and rejuvenation, The Spa at Mandarin Oriental Mayfair introduces several UK firsts in wellness treatments. The spa’s menu includes binaural biohacking treatments and exclusive offerings inspired by the local area, such as the ‘Tranquillity of Mayfair’ massage and the ‘Elegance of Mayfair’ facial. The spa also features a 25-metre swimming pool, vitality pools, a state-of-the-art gym, and a range of holistic wellness services, ensuring guests can indulge in a comprehensive wellness experience.
