Moxy Berlin Ostbahnhof

Not only do we feature luxury hotels on TLE but we also like to showcase hotels that drive innovation and creativity within the hospitality sector. One such new brand that is helping to shape the ‘millennial travel’ audience is Moxy by Marriott. A baby in the market, Moxy, has just a handful of hotels across Europe but this looks set to blossom in 2017 and beyond.

TLE were invited to come and experience the new boutique hotel in Berlin so read on to find out what we thought of the Moxy Berlin.

Location

Located on Andreasstraße the hotel is directly opposite Ostbahnhof Station which is a main artery station into and out of Berlin. Within 10 minutes by train you can you can be in Alexanderplatz and onto Friedrichstr Bahnhof.  The hotel location also has a wide selection of trams and buses passing so ideal for both business and leisure.

Check-in

Check-in was a fun experience, the music was jumping on arrival – making you wonder if you were in a nightclub or hotel, I loved the atmosphere! A ‘Got Moxy’ arrival cocktail is also provided and the staff jump between serving bar customers and check-ins at the full-service bar/check-in. The space works well and immediately pulls you into everything that is going on.

Communal Areas

The communal areas are really where the hotel excels; one large ground floor of sealed concrete floors is broken up into lounges, bar, restaurant and chill-out areas (it reminded me a bit of a Citizen M layout). There are also additional meeting areas and a gym. You are encouraged to relax the moment you arrive in the hotel, pick up a book and play games. The space also featured an abundance of USB outlets, Macs, free printing and of course every millennial staple – free and fast Wi-Fi.

One thing that is great about this type of layout is that when you arrive in the space of a stranger you immediately feel part of something.

To bring the hotel to life, emerging artists from around the world were invited to participate in the #BlankCanvas global initiative and the result is some really fun pieces of work around the space.

The Room

The hotel has 210 rooms (standard to family) with better views out to the front.

Rooms come with sound-reducing walls and 42″ LCD flat-screen televisions, there are USB ports and numerous plug sockets which are very handy. The room design is functional and serves the purpose, but it is slightly underwhelming. When I experienced the communal area I was literally buzzing with excitement on arrival but I was deflated somewhat once I was in the room. There is nothing wrong with the room, it was very practical and clean – the bathroom is nice with a granite sink and Muk Toiletries and a powerful shower, but it lacks the personality of the hotel lobby.

One feature I found really useful was the night lighting. When you step out of the bed at night a low-level light under the bed came on which was just bright enough to help guide you to the bathroom without having to fiddle about with switches on the wall!

Food and Drink

The hotel has 24/7 Food and Beverage, with a selection of fresh Panini sandwiches, local dishes including Spätzle and Sauerbraten and a range of healthy alternatives from salad to antipasti. An evening Crockpot is served along with a variety of cocktails, craft beers and speciality wines.

A Continental buffet breakfast is served in the same place and is self-service.

Finances and Final Thoughts

Moxy is fun and certainly ‘of the moment’, I enjoyed the experience and would recommend it as a value-for-money experience that had plenty of atmosphere in its communal spaces.
