Design-Led, Playful Interiors
Guests are greeted by a double-height glass entrance to the hotel, framed with a green living wall on three sides, and an overhang, on which sits the name EDITION on the far right edge. An art installation-like uber-modern white spiral staircase can be seen through the glass doors and windows, giving clues as to what the almost sci-fi interiors will hold. But the building isn’t all about modernism; its boundary wall includes an 18th-century baroque door designed by Don Pedro de Ribera. And inside, the lobby contains an antique piece from Madrid’s Royal Tapestry Factory (alongside a sleek pool table made from Bianco Neve matte marble, a backlit bar and a resident DJ who’s on the decks after dark).
An Address At The Heart Of The City’s Old Town
Bordering the hip districts of Lavapiés, La Latina, Malasaña and Chueca, the hotel is found in the pretty Plaza de la Descalzas, moments away from Puerta de Sol. It overlooks red-tiled rooftops and period buildings with wrought iron balconies. A 16th-century monastery is close by — you’ll hear the bells if staying on a Sunday, evocative of a time long past. As this hotel is likely to attract an arty crowd, it’s fitting that the Madrid EDITION is an easy 20-minute walk to the Prado (along with the city’s other big attractions) and the Golden Triangle of Art. El Corte Inglés is just 100 meters away for shoppers and the Opera House, restaurants and bars are all in the vicinity.

Soothing Suites
200 guest quarters which include 21 suites and two penthouses. They are all about the white, with a simple, minimal styling employing artily-shaped backlit headboards (whose design is a riff on the aforementioned exterior baroque door) and furry throws and cushions to provide variety in texture, rather than through the colour; the design detailing here is the work of Ian Schrager. Each room comes with a Nespresso machine, a minibar (which includes healthier options), Italian linens and a Bluetooth speaker, while clean-lined bathrooms have rose gold hardware, wibbly-edged back-lit accent mirrors, GHD hair dryers and Le Labo toiletries.
Some guest rooms also have terraces and freestanding bathtubs, others are interconnecting with rollaway beds, and accessible rooms are available, with lift access to all. VIPs like Dua Lipa have been spotted taking up residence in the penthouses, so you may well spot some famous faces when passing through the hotel’s corridors.
Penthouse
Go all out and book one of the two suites in the hotel each with private pools and aptly named Opera and Madrid.

Jeronimo
Be sure to visit Jeronimo, not only for chef Enrique Olvera’s Mexican food but to emerge through its futuristic hot pink corridor. Once inside, the vibe remains funky and colourful, with plenty of living greenery. Diners can order sharing dishes, mains and margaritas (there are, of course, other drinks, but a smoky mezcal margarita is a must). Olvera has already made a splash in New York with Cosme and Mexico City with Pujol, and brings his imaginative approach to Madrid. Jeronimo is also the setting for breakfast, with suitably Mexican morning repasts, along with Spanish and mainstream continental options. At the moment the venue is fully indoors, but this restaurant will be extending onto a terrace.

Breakfast
Breakfast is served in Jeronimo a la carte style with both regular breakfast items or a Mexican breakfast. We went for the Mexican breakfast which was well worth it, fresh flavours and a palate of bright colours is the ideal way to start the day.
The Punch Room and Lobby Bar
On the ground floor is the speakeasy-style Punch Room, where the namesake beverage is ladelled from a large bowl, to the sounds of clubby beats.
The aforementioned lobby is also home to a candlelit bar, where you can recline on a U-shaped sofa or shoot some pool as you imbibe beverages selected from the caged bottle display. Jean-Michel Frank, Maison Intègre, Christian Astuguevieille and Emmanuel Levet Stenne are just a few of the names involved in creating custom pieces for this area, many of which are illuminated by feature lighting.
A Subterranean Spa
The placing of the basement spa makes it feel like a secret hideaway, aided by the presence of candles and indulgent aromas. This houses five treatment rooms, one with a private steam suite, a couples’ room and a mud therapy room. Treatments appeal to all five senses and utilise products from the Spanish brand Natura Bissé, while the massages at the spa use oils by the trendy NYC brand Le Labo. And you don’t have to stay here to get the experience — day guests are welcome too.
Also beneath ground is the fitness centre, with cardio equipment and weights.
The Destination Rooftop
The jewel at the top of the Madrid EDITION’s crown, the rooftop is the place to be. Boasting the largest pool in any of Madrid’s top-tier hotels, its 17-metre length allows for some serious swimming, while in-water beds allow for some serious sunning. Including these, there’s a total of 60 sunbeds, as well as 10 cabanas. And for those in the mood for a more garden-like atmosphere, there’s a grassy seating area on the rooftop too.
Also at this level is a further eatery; Oroya, helmed by Peruvian Chef Diego Muñoz, is a greenhouse-like setting, adorned with a blackened steel cage, accented with glass panels and climbing plants. Tapas-style plates like Ceviches and Ha-Kao on Parihuela Broth, with influences from Spain, Africa, Italy, China, and Japan, are served in a relaxed atmosphere. Sommelier Julio Barluenga curates a wine menu to accompany the famous Pisco Sour and Capitan cocktails. On the terrace, the vista is breathtaking, and the garden features a fireplace, vine-covered pergola, a teak bar, and rattan bar stools, with a long oak table for leisurely meals with friends and family.
Final Thoughts
If you’re planning a trip to Madrid this hotel really does tick all the boxes, with its ultra-minimalist design, central location and wide range of unique dining and drinking options it’s no wonder it’s consistently receiving five stars from guests looking for the best luxury hotel experience in the Spanish capital.
