Background and Concept
Beautifully positioned in Portman Square which oozes quintessential British charm and refinement the hotel was built to a meticulous design and opened in 1970 by the Loews Hotel Group as ‘The Churchill’. In Feb 2004 Hyatt Hotels took over full ownership of the property and the hotel that we now know and love was born.
The hotel’s semi brutalist exterior makes way to sleek and spacious interiors complete with chandeliers, marble pillars and polished wooden floors. Interiors offer references to Winston Churchill throughout the communal areas and guest rooms, with unique Churchhill artifacts dotted around the property too.
The hotel has partnered with Daunt Books to create curated bookshelves in some of the suites and in The Churchill Bar. The shelves feature books that were Churchill’s and Clementine’s favourites. While the furniture in the hotel was designed with input from Churchill’s family, and the fabrics and furniture designs reflect Churchill’s appreciation for British craftsmanship. A statue of Churchill, created by Lawrence Holofcener, is a stone’s throw away from the hotel in nearby Hyde Park.
