The Rose
Located in the seaside town of Deal, The Rose used to be simply a pub with rooms. Now it’s a designer boutique hotel with five standard rooms and three suites, all of which have been individually styled with impeccable taste (the owner used to be design editor of US magazine Wallpaper). Local art and Farrow and Ball wallpaper adorn the walls, with rolltop baths, Austin Austin toiletries and mid-century furnishings to boot. But don’t expect a TV in the room – instead, there are record players, with a selection of vinyl – ideal for those wanting to switch off from screens. An innovative take on British dishes is served in the equally modish restaurant, with seasonal cocktails served in the bar.
Albion House
Privately owned and run by a married couple, this stately house in Ramsgate has entertained politicians and royalty. A huge restoration project brought the late 18th-century property back to life, highlighting its stunning and intricate period features, yet infusing an airy modern feel. The in-house eatery, Townley’s Restaurant and Bar has harbourside seating as well as an alfresco terrace and serves locally sourced produce. Some of the hotel’s 13 bedrooms have sea views and, due to the building’s age, all rooms bar one are accessed via stairs.
Eastwell Manor, Champneys Hotel & Spa
Owned by the Champneys group, Eastwell Manor’s guests enjoy the privilege of access to a divine on-site spa with a 20-metre heated pool and signature treatments. The vibe is quintessentially English and upmarket – tennis, petanque and croquet are all available within its grounds. Guided walks are provided, making the most of its surrounding nature trails, while memorable meals are served in its Manor Restaurant and Brasserie. Tuck into scones and petit fours, and sip Earl Grey from a china cup in the room where Queen Victoria once took afternoon tea. Guests are accommodated either in the main house or a separate mews building.
Chilston Park Hotel
Situated just a few miles from the M20 motorway, this is a dreamy place to break from a road trip. Awarded four AA Red Stars and a Visit Britain accolade in 2020, the ethos here is all about creating custom-designed experiences for guests. It has a Grade I listing, dates back to the 17thg century and is surrounded by 22 acres of land with a grand fountain greeting arriving guests. Rooms here are filled with antiques, alongside yoga mats and fitness equipment to work out in the privacy of your own space.
