Antigua Palma

Hotel
(5 stars)

Palma’s many nooks and crannies offer visitors the perfect opportunity for some fascinating sun-soaked exploration. Hidden in the heart of this picturesque Moorish city on the aptly named Calle de Sol, is the boutique hotel, Antigua Palma. At this Casa Noble (once the home of Balearic nobles), guests can escape the usual tourist hotspots and experience authentic Mallorcan hospitality.

Steeped in history

Antigua Palma is located in what was once the Jewish district, on one of the oldest streets in the heart of the city. The building is believed to date back as far as the 16th century and has had an illustrious past. In addition to the local medieval, Baroque and Renaissance architecture, Roman and Islamic archaeological remains can be found close by. The most significant school of cartography in Europe found its home just a short way from the front door and Palma’s role on the Silk Road. Exploring the gems of historic Palma on foot from here is easy, with the Cathedral, Almudaina Palace, Museum of Mallorca and the Arab Baths but a stroll away. Step back in time as you meander the district’s secret alleyways and picturesque squares.

Effortlessly elegant design

This rich heritage is echoed in Antigua Palma’s interiors and exteriors – there are multiple map references and travel notebooks incorporated into the decor, while subtle colours evoking those of sea and land can be found throughout. Wood and leather furnishings continue the maritime style, complemented by areas with a bright and minimal aesthetic. Its ancient balconies and shutters are just some of the original features to have been preserved. Ikat fabrics, marés and stones from Binissalem incorporate the renowned local island craft.

Rooms range from deluxe doubles, through to expansive family-friendly suites, with everything you could need for a pampered stay. Lying open to the skies above, this courtyard is a magical spot to find total peace and serenity. And don’t miss the stunning 17th-century Marés stone vault on the lower floor.

The guest journey

The travel theme is ever-present as each guest begins their journey at Antigua Palma. Greeted with a glass of fizz and a guided tour, guests are regaled with stories from the hotel’s past while passing through the public areas. Each of the airy bedrooms boasts a bespoke wooden headboard with compass design, coffee machines, local information, a personal note and a gift.

Nearby

Local craft shops and markets are close by, as are the bigger stores and the hotel’s concierge can offer suggestions and make arrangements for activities and excursions. Or if relaxation is in order, a trip to the private spa in the oldest part of the building provides some welcome rest and rejuvenation. It offers a heated pool, a Finnish sauna, Hammam, chromotherapy/aromatherapy shower and an ice fountain, as well as a range of treatments. And even the departure process here is memorable.

Antigua’s Mallorcan kitchen

Palma may boast a plethora of tempting eateries, but a meal at the hotel’s own Sa Cucina del Antigua should not be passed-by. Typical Mallorcan dishes are served here, created using local produce. Drink and dine alfresco with superb views as the sun sets, at Terracotta, on the spacious rooftop terrace. Or grab some cocktails and tasty tapas while catching some rays by the plunge pool during the day. Fine Spanish wines, aperitifs, coffees, teas and liqueurs can be take in the Antigua bar, along with light Mediterranean style snacks. Guests who prefer some privacy can order from the room service menu, with full details of events and the range of food on offer, in the in-room information pack.
